Cytotropism, Part 1

Cytotropism is one of my top five episodes, hands down. The dynamic between Raul and Daedalus is endlessly fascinating, and the side story involving Re-l is pretty interesting too when you take it apart and look at all of the facts.

This will be a three part analysis and it might be a little long-winded and rambling…but I hope it sheds a little light on what’s really going on in the episode. I know that when I first watched it, things were confusing. It was one of those “aha!” episodes for everyone involved, but it left some of the viewers wondering if we were witnessing the beginnings of a Xanatos Gambit. We were, actually, but one that didn’t quite form to completion.

Ergo Proxy opening with all the characters.

intojh asked: I've just seen again episodes 19 and 21... In the 19th Smile Land's proxy said that if two proxies get in touch, they're forced to fight. But in 21 Ergo asks himself why he had killed Monad. But now I don't understand: it shouldn't be ''normal'' for proxies fighting each other till death? And so why is Ergo such shocked for Monad's death? And also... Why did Ergo killed the entourage which kept all his memories and after this he started crying?? I don't get it... O_ò Could you explain me? XD

Ergo asks himself why he killed Monad because she was supposed to be his lover. He realizes that she was, in fact, the reason why he was in Mosk, so he wonders why he killed her. (He’s also probably asking why SHE wanted to kill HIM, but… Details.)

My theory is that the Entourage was NOT killed by Ergo Proxy, but by Proxy One himself. Yes, it looks like Ergo, but I think that was the point. Remember the pendant he left with the Entourage? It was Proxy One’s pendant, which Vincent didn’t have. It couldn’t have been Vincent. It had to have been Proxy One who left it there for him with the message ‘Awakening’ to tell both Vincent and Re-l to return to Romdeau.

Formality in Ergo Proxy

This is actually a speculation post, so please take this with a grain of salt, folks.

In Ergo Proxy, we see a lot of people referring to each other by various titles and names. There’s very little “Mister” and “Miss” involved in the anime, though. Romdeau has its own sense of formality and proper language. I’ve thought through it for several months now and I’d just like to share some of the interesting things I’ve found. Keep in mind that this is in the English version only; I have a friend who knows Japanese well and I need to talk to her again about how people speak to one another. (Japanese is more about grammar and word choice. It’s not just titles.)

Proxy Project

One of the most confusing aspects of Ergo Proxy is, without a doubt, the Proxy Project. What is it? Why was it made? And what the heck was MCQ talking about during the Quiz Show?

Hi :) From the first moment I’ve met your blog, I felt the desire to share with you some of my considerations about this anime. I’m new on Tumblr, so I don’t know any other way to get in touch with you. I hope I don’t bother you by writing my questions here. XD First of all, I’m sincerely in love with this anime. I enjoyed very much not only the gloomy atmosphere that fills every single ep, but also the deep analysis of character’s psychology, especially the one on Vincent’s mind. but also many scenes which don’t appear in the last version of the anime. I was thinking, then, that maybe many choices that ended up to make the anime ”boring” in some points came after these changes [this trailer was released in 2005, and the official anime not too much time after] do you think is possible that the plot was, originally, better explained, and much of the incoherences were resolved during the course of the story and not only in the last ep[as happened in the official anime]?

First, welcome to Tumblr and thanks for hitting up my blog! I’m glad you really loved Ergo Proxy too; it seems like a lot of people gave up on it after the first episode or two. To see so many people really love it on Tumblr is awesome!

Awakening

I thought a long while about what the first post of this blog should be and I finally decided I’d discuss the awakening of the central characters of the series.

The title of the first disc is Awakening, which is also the title of the first episode. But we can take care to notice that it is also the central beginning and the commencement of the emotional awakening of all of the main characters. You may not notice it at first, but it’s there.

The Cogito Virus itself is some sort of “infection” in the main programming of AutoReivs. It gives them autonomy and, in some cases, it causes them to become hostile. Others simply begin to express their new found understanding by praying. Many of them, in actuality, become overwhelmed and confused. In all of these cases, the citizens of Romdeau effectively put them down and destroy them.

It’s heavily implied that the Cogito Virus begins with the Proxies. In fact, the Cogito Virus is very similar to the Pulse of the Awakening that the Proxies themselves experience. It drives them to destroy any and all Proxies in the nearby area. Once that is done, they will generally begin their massacre on the humans of their dome if the AutoReivs are not already taking care of them. The Cogito Virus then turns the AutoReivs hostile towards each other or they then lie down and wait for the end.

The Cogito Virus itself is an awakening, as we see in Pino, Iggy, and Kristeva. Though limited to AutoReivs, it’s interesting to notice that it’s called a virus and is considered bad. I’ll come back to this point later.

The Proxies caused the Cogito Virus. But they also were the trigger for the emotional awakening of its citizens. Let’s start with each of them in order of their awakenings as we understand.
